The fascination of the GTI
The fascination of the GTI.
1976: Volkswagen produces the Golf GTI, the world's first compact sports car. The concept is widely copied on a national and international scale - but the original remains unmatched.

2004: Like its famous predecessor, the new Golf GTI also embodies pure power, pure dynamism and sportiness through and through.
The centre of power
The heart of the Golf GTI is the newly developed 2.0 litre FSI turbo engine delivering 147 kW / 200 bhp of power (CO2 emissions: 190-194 g/km**). This turbocharged direct-injection unit develops 280 Nm of torque, propelling the car to 100 km/h in just 7.2 seconds and pushing it to a top speed of 235 km/h.
The unmistakable GTI
On the outside, the red-frame honeycomb radiator grille, a distinctive GTI rear spoiler and the twin exhaust pipes immediately signal the sporty calibre of the new Golf GTI. And on the inside, too, the classic sports steering wheel, sports seats and aluminium-look pedals leave you in no doubt where you are: in a genuine GTI!
