Safety of you and your passengers are as important to us as they are to you.  That’s why Volkswagen engineers rigorously test all our cars, then test them again – from airbags to brakes.

Airbags

Overview
Why do we need airbags?
Because seat belts alone are not enough.  In an accident, passengers can be thrown forward even when they’re belted increasing the risk of injuries.
That’s where airbags come in.  The front and second row seats of the Scirocco are equipped with 6 airbags: driver and front passenger airbags, front seat side impact airbags and a curtain airbag system for front and second row occupants.  Combined with seat belts, the airbags provide an exceptional level of protection for all occupants by cushioning the impact in the event of a collision.

What does the airbag do?

  • An airbag is deployed in the event of an accident to cushion the body and minimise the risk of injury.

Prevention is always better than cure
We like to put our drivers on the road to safety.  That’s why we’ve included advanced active safety features in our cars to help prevent accidents.  But sadly, accidents still happen.  Even so they need not cause injuries.

Six ways to cushion the blow
We’ve fitted no less than 6 airbags in the Scirocco – including front, side and curtain airbags.

Our front and side airbags offer vital protection for the driver and front seat passenger.  They serve to cushion the impact coming from the front and sides.  They know just when to go off too, thanks to the smart sensors that measure the severity of a collision.  So there’s no need to worry about your airbags activating in a mirror incident.  And if the front passenger seat is empty, the airbag won’t be activated.

Alarm with interior protection

Technical

How does the alarm protect your Scirocco?
If someone tries to break into your locked Scirocco, the alarm will sound and the hazard lights flash continuously.  The alarm’s interior protection system detects movement inside the car, but a button can easily turn it off if you have to leave pets inside for a short time.  We like to make life easier for you – and much more difficult for thieves.

What is an electronic engine immobilizer?
The engine immobilizer has revolutionised car security.  It uses sophisticated coding software to ensure the correct key is being used to start the vehicle.  When the key is inserted a communication is set up between the key, the immobilizer and the engine and only when the correct key is used will the engine start.

Optional rear parking sensors

  • Overview

This system will detect objects located behind your vehicle as well as making parking in the smallest spaces so much easier.  Sensors in the bumper operate by ultrasound and emit a beep.  As objects get closer, the sound becomes more frequent.

Optional headlight washers

  • Overview

Headlights washers are just another little luxury you can choose for your Scirocco.  They’re designed to keep your headlights free from dirt at all times – so you can enjoy maximum visibility in all kinds of conditions…

How it works

An electrical pump sprays water or cleaning fluid at high pressure onto the headlights from the outside, washing away the dust and dirt.  It increases your safety so you can drive in confidence through snow, rain or mud

ABS

Overview

Why the anti-lock braking system?
As you are probably aware, skidding is one of the major causes of accidents all over the world.

It tends to happen in an emergency – when the driver suddenly brakes heavily, then skids helplessly towards the scene of the accident as the wheels lock.

But thanks to the anti-lock braking system, skidding can now be avoided by giving you more control of the wheel whilst braking.

What it does:

  • Prevents wheels locking under emergency braking.
  • Help avoid accidents.

ABS

Technical
How it used to be.
In the past, drivers were taught how to ‘cadence brake’.  This technique involves applying and releasing the brake quickly to prevent prolonged wheel lock and maintain control of the vehicle under heavy braking.

Finally, a braking solution that you can rely on.
Thank to the ABS, we can now brake far more safely, making cadence braking unnecessary.  Using state-of-the-art electronics, ABS detects when a wheel is about to lock – and automatically releases and reapplies the brakes to prevent a skid.

Now you can take control of the wheel
With ordinary brakes, your front wheels lock and no matter how hard you turn your steering wheel, nothing happens.  But ABS prevents those wheels from locking, so you can steer to safety – even if it doesn’t stop in time.

ESP

Overview

Electronic Stabilisation Programme – or ESP – has the ability to predict what your car is about to do.

What it does
ESP uses sensors to monitor the progress of your wheels.  The moment they start to slip, ESP takes over by;

  • Applying the brakes to one or more wheels.
  • Reducing engine power if necessary.

The result
Skidding is stopped before it beging.

ESP

  • Technical

How it works
ESP links to the Scirocco’s electronic systems such as the anti-lock brakes (ABS) and engine braking control (EBC).  It has sensors on the wheels and steering wheel, plus a yaw movement sensor.

The ESP plays a further role utilising electronic differential lock and traction control to help correct oversteer, understeer and loss of stability of the vehicle.  The result is optimum traction when rounding bends.

So ESP monitors your car at all times.  As soon as something unusual happens eg. If a wheel loses grip or the car starts to slip it helps regain control by applying the brakes to each or all of the wheels, and cutting engine power.
